In "Extreme Ownership," Jocko Willink and Leif Babin emphasize the importance of taking full responsibility for every aspect of one's life, including mental health. While the book is primarily focused on leadership principles derived from their experiences as Navy SEALs, the concept of "extreme ownership" can be applied to mental health as well.
Jocko's book encourages readers to take proactive steps in managing their mental well-being by:
  1. Acknowledging the Problem: Just as leaders must recognize and admit when things are not going well, individuals should acknowledge when they are struggling with mental health. Ignoring or downplaying these issues can exacerbate them.
  2. Taking Responsibility: Willink and Babin stress that individuals must take ownership of their mental health. This means not blaming external circumstances or other people for how you feel, but instead, taking control of your actions, thoughts, and emotions.
  3. Seeking Help: The book indirectly suggests that taking ownership also involves seeking the necessary resources or support, whether it's from mentors, professionals, or trusted individuals.
  4. Discipline and Routine: Willink advocates for discipline and routine as tools for success. This can be extended to mental health by maintaining healthy habits, such as regular exercise, sleep, and mindfulness practices, which are crucial for mental well-being.
While "Extreme Ownership" does not focus explicitly on mental health, its principles of responsibility, accountability, and proactive action are applicable to maintaining and improving mental health.

Mental health counseling can serve as a significant catalyst for helping individuals and couples face unwanted and uncomfortable emotions and experiences. No matter what you are facing, whether due to a choice you have made or a choice someone else has made, you can take ownership. No one else can take ownership and face it for you. Consider allowing a counselor sit with you and guide you as you take steps to acknowledge the problem and take an active role of responsibility for whatever it might be you are experiencing.
